about acropolis
The Acropolis, or “the crowning jewel of the Greek capital and one of the most important cultural sites not only in Greece but the entire world.” (GCT, Greek City Times) The Parthenon is the most popular building in the Acropolis. “Its massive foundations were made of limestone, and the columns were made of Pentelic marble, a material that was utilized for the first time… The architects were Iktinos and Kallikrates and it was dedicated to the goddess Athena Pallas or Parthenos. The temple’s main function was to shelter the monumental statue of Athena that was made by Pheidias out of gold and ivory.” (The Parthenon, Ancient-Greece.org)
